GC Men’s Tennis Announces 2014 Schedule
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – The 2014 Georgia College men’s tennis schedule has been released by head coach Steve Barsby. The 2013 men’s team (19-7, 7-3 Peach Belt Conference) finished at No. 11 nationally, while the 2014 team retained that same No. 11 ranking in last November’s Preseason Poll by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
“It’s a great schedule pitting us against nine top-25 teams,” said Barsby, who surpassed 400 career wins last season. ” We’re a little young this year, but I’m hoping some of our more experienced players can help the younger players move forward.”
Based on the preseason poll rankings, the Bobcats will face four top-10 teams in No. 2 Armstrong Atlantic State University, No. 3 University of West Florida, No. 7 Lander University, and No. 10 Columbus State University. The other five opponents that round out the top-25 include: No. 17 Francis Marion University (FMU), No. 20 GRU Augusta, No. 21 USC Aiken, No. 22 University of Southern Indiana, and No. 23 University of West Alabama.
The 2014 schedule consists of 22 matches, 10 home, eight away, and four at neutral sites. Of the top-25 opponents the Bobcats will face, five are away, three are home, and one is at a neutral site. Georgia College opens its season at home Friday, Feb. 7 against Morehouse College at 3 p.m. The Bobcats open PBC play on the road Wednesday, Feb. 12 at Armstrong.
The Preseason Poll also places Georgia College as the No. 4 team in the Southeast Region. The Bobcats will try to attain an eighth-consecutive regional bid this season.
The 2014 PBC Championships will be hosted by FMU in Florence, S.C., April 17-19. The Regionals take place May 3-6 with the location to be announced. The NCAA Finals are at Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 14-17.
