GBI investigating Jackson Police officer involved shooting
JACKSON, Ga. (41NBC/WMGT/AP) – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Jackson Police Department are investigating an officer involved shooting.
Authorities said a police officer shot an armed man who pointed a rifle at them. The victim has now been identified as 52-year-old Thomas Lagano.
The GBI said in a statement that officers responded to a domestic call at a home on James Moore Drive Wednesday around 3:20 p.m.
According to a news release from the GBI, officers arrived on scene and spoke with Linda Lagano, Thomas’ wife. Linda told officers Thomas was being belligerent and had been drinking. Thomas saw the officers from the garage and went back inside the home.
GBI investigators said Thomas came out the front door of the home holding a gun and pointing it in the air. Officer Kevin Hill gave Thomas multiple commands to drop the gun, but he didn’t listen. Thomas lowered the gun toward Officer Hill. Officer Hill fired one round from his service weapon hitting Thomas, according to GBI officials.
Thomas was air lifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where he is being treated for his injuries. The responding officers were not injured during the incident.
Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Towaliga Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for any action they deem appropriate.
