FVSU hosts walk to raise mental health awareness

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Walkers hit the pavement to raise awareness for people living with mental illnesses.

Fort Valley State University hosted the “Walk for a Cause” 5K Thursday evening. The event benefited the National Alliance on Mental Illness Central Georgia.

The goal was to raise money for the organization’s group home and educate the community. Officials want to reduce the stigma associated with the condition.

“It is not as bad as you think it is. Everybody can be helped. All we have to do is get you there so you can get the help that you need,” Arnold Moorer with NAMI Central Georgia said.

The walk was held to kick off National Mental Health Awareness Month which is recognized during the month of May.
