FVSU eliminating programs to make room for more students

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Fort Valley State University is no longer offering several programs.

The school released a statement saying it has eliminated seven majors, including English, sociology, and computer information courses. The university also laid off nine faculty members.

“With a drop in student enrollment in some of the programs, these programs are not highly subscribed by students and apparently the programs have to be re-evaluated,” said FVSU Biology Department Chair Dr. George Dbata.

Dbata says his department needs more laboratory and classroom space. Now the biology classes has nearly 40 students per class.

According to Dbata, it is difficult to conduct class in a distracted and rowdy environment. He prefers 30 students per one professor in order to have a teachable class.

He is urging the school to make room for the increase in students interested in majoring in biology.
