FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Fort Valley police chief David Wilson, who was sworn in last month, is sharing some of his plans for his his new job.

In an interview with 41NBC, Wilson said serving in Fort Valley feels just right.

“I’m a motorcycle officer and I came down here to do the Christmas parade, several years ago, and I just fell in love with the town,” he said. “It was really cool, a little homegrown county kind of town, I just loved it. I was joking with the chief and said, ‘Now I’m going to have to work here. One thing led to another and here I am.”

According to Chief Wilson, Fort Valley has seen a drop in shootings and crime this year. He says he wants to keep those numbers low, but to help with that, he needs more officers.

“We feel that the combination of highly trained, highly experienced offices, and multiple years of service; bringing them into this environment, that allows younger officers to have somebody to lean on and learn from. I think that’s going to help over all bring down all crime, not just aggravated crime.”

Chief Wilson says another one of his main goals is to continue properly serving Fort Valley residents and the community.

“It’s not about me being a chief, that’s just the title,” he said. “It’s about me being there to get with my officer’s needs, so they can go out and do the work, and protect the citizens and the city as a whole.”

He says the city has grown a lot recently and wants to see the trend continue.

“I know there’s been a lot of progress made sense I’ve been here, and I’m just looking forward to seeing how the city as a whole can grow and get more businesses in the area,” he said. “I want the city to be a more know place, where people want to come out and experience the town and have thing to do.”

He didn’t reveal them in his conversation, but Chief Wilson says there are some future plans in place for the city to continue its growth.
