Fort Valley State University hosts International Cultural Festival

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Fort Valley State University hosted the first International Cultural Festival and Soccer Exhibition this Saturday.

Food vendors lined the parking lot while different music acts performed and a soccer tournament took place at the stadium.

The President of the University, Ivelaw Griffith, said the student body isn’t as diverse as he would like it to be. He believes the world has a lot to offer, and so does the University, so why not host an event to showcase both?

“We’ve got great academics, the world must come and be part of it. We’ve got great athletics, the world must become a part of it. It’s to bring people in, have people know about the world, and make some money at the same time for the University,” said Griffith.

Griffith said sponsors made this event possible and all the proceeds will go towards athletics.

One Fort Valley State University student is happy to have a place where he can share his Nigerian heritage with other cultures.

“It means the world because honestly, a lot of people, they would look at what I’m wearing and think it’s just funny or something like that, but for them to actually see what we do and what we’re about is actually a really great thing,” said Olamikunle Onikosi.

Griffith has every intention of making this an annual event. He hopes to one day have it as a two day celebration.
