Former Braves, Falcons player encouraging children to read

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Former two-sport professional athlete Brian Jordan gave out free copies of his children’s book after reading to students at Bernd Elementary on Thursday.

“If we don’t encourage our kids to read early they get left behind,” Jordan said.

Before reading at the school, Jordan, who played for both the Atlanta Braves and Falcons, spoke at the United Way of Central Georgia’s Opening Ceremony. The non-profit organization set their goals for the year, one of which was getting more children to read.

“We need you because it is important that our children be given the wonderful gift of reading to be lifelong learners,” Sylvia McGee said, addressing the crowd on Thursday.

Jordan’s book, “I Told You I Can Play,” is a true story about Jordan’s childhood. The moral: believe in yourself and never give up.

“For me being blessed to play two professional sports and able to give back I want to encourage kids to believe in their dreams,” Jordan said. “To learn as much as they can and make sure education is number one in their life.”
