Food Pantry Feeds Dozens in Macon Over the Holidays

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – As hundreds of middle Georgia families may wonder where their next meal is coming from, one Macon church is making sure those families stay fed all year round.

About every other week, you can find Jason Shearer at the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank, sorting through boxes, barrels, and crates of food.

Tons of it.

Shearer is the manager of the Harvest Cathedral Food Pantry, a new program at the church geared toward feeding the less fortunate in Macon.

“Last month we distributed 5500 pounds of food. And we started in April so in 8 months we’re already up to 200 families and 3 tons of food,” Shearer said.

The food pantry is the only one in the area. Every week dozens of needy families line up to receive about a week’s worth of groceries.

“At Harvest that’s what we’re all about the one anothers. We love one another, confess to one another, take care of one another, and that’s what we want to show this community,” Shearer said.

The food pantry is funded separately from everything else at the church.

Every Thursday from 5 to 7, about 15 volunteers help Shearer out

“We want to give this community a big bear hug and a sloppy wet kiss and say we absolutely love you and we are here to do anything we can for you,” he said.

Shearer says for a long time he wasn’t sure how he was going to help people where he lived but he knew he wanted to impact his community.

“I came to this area. I saw the need in this area, and I said I want to be that change in my community,” he said.

Shearer says he plans on starting a community garden in the spring so fresh fruits and vegetables can be given a way as well.
