Flag retirement ceremony held at Fort Hawkins in honor of Veterans Day
This year marked the 9th Annual Fort Hawkins Veterans Day Salute. Several patriotic and veteran organizations participated in a solemn U.S. Flag Retirement ceremony.
“I was particularly thrilled not just to see the veterans in the audience, but the children,” Marty Willett, the Fort Hawkins Project Coordinator said. “The children that are bearing witness to our honoring our nation’s veterans.”
The fort and factory’s namesake, Col. Benjamin Hawkins, was one of our nation’s first veterans. He served on Gen. George Washington’s Revolutionary War Staff.
The ceremony was an opportunity to honor all veterans. A new welcome home bench was also dedicated during the ceremony.
