Firefighters in Vienna looking for votes for $10,000
The contest is for the “Best in the U.S.,” a competition looking for the best volunteer fire house in the country.
As the years have gone by, more and more volunteer firefighters have filled the halls of the Vienna Fire Station in downtown Vienna.
During any given day, 25 volunteers rotate in and out of the building.
It’s something firefighter Kenny Calhoun has noticed.
“We have grown considerably over the last 30 years. We’ve basically outgrown the building,” Calhoun said.
So one of the volunteer firefighters did something about it. He submitted the department to compete in the Johnsonville Best Firehouse in the U.S. Contest.
“We had to write a 500 word essay about why we thought our fire department was one of the best in the U.S,” Calhoun said.
Vienna is now in the top 20.
The winner gets $10,000.
It’s money Calhoun knows exactly what to do with.
“We need more space. Of course it’s just one of those things that we’ve evolved into that we need more space and some upgrades,” he said.
Along with the $10,000, the winner gets smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire training videos, and a lot of Johnsonville sausage.
“There will be a lot their product available that we can use for fundraising events,” Calhoun said.
The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department is the only department in the entire state to make the top 20.
