MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – As families across Middle Georgia prepare to celebrate Independence Day, safety experts are reminding everyone to make fireworks safety a priority before lighting the fuse.

In Georgia, fireworks can legally be discharged on July 3 and July 4 from 10 a.m. until 11:59 p.m.

Jesse Pittman, store operator at Jake’s Fireworks in Macon, said one of the best ways to prevent injuries is to be prepared before fireworks are ever lit.

“Most importantly, you have fire extinguishers, water, and I always use sand like the little stuff for the kids,” Pittman said.

Pittman also encourages people to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes instead of flip-flops or Crocs and says the person lighting fireworks should always be sober.

“Whoever’s operating the fireworks, make sure they’re sober. They’re not under the influence,” Pittman said.

Lt. Carell Rembert said fireworks should only be used in open areas away from homes, vehicles, vegetation and anything else that could catch fire.

“We ask that you be at least 50 feet from any structure, any vehicles, anything that’s combustible, no vegetation. About 50 feet is a safe distance, and definitely your patrons, your family, your guests, make sure they are a safe distance from those fireworks as well,” Rembert said.

Fire officials also recommend keeping children under close supervision, never relighting fireworks that fail to ignite, and waiting until used fireworks have completely cooled before throwing them away.

Officials say taking a few extra precautions can help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and memorable Fourth of July celebration.
