Fire destroys Westview Baptist Church in Hawkinsville
HAWKINSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A fire has destroyed a Pulaski County church that was built more than two decades ago. Westview Baptist Church was built in 1988 on Georgia Highway 26 in Hawkinsville.
Pulaski County Fire Chief Leslie Sewell says it started around 7:00 Thursday morning. Nearly 40 firefighters from several different agencies spent five hours trying to extinguish the fire.
“We’re in a section of the county where there’s no fire hydrants,” explains Chief Sewell. “So every gallon that we’ve put on this fire, we had to haul it in here. So we’ve been hauling water all morning.”
Church members and the pastor plan to meet Sunday at 11:00 a.m. for their weekly worship service. They will set up on the church’s lawn using tents and chairs near the burned building.
The cause of the church fire is under investigation.
