(CNN)- A fiery crash during an air show in Idaho left behind a massive burn scar, smoke-filled fields and road closures after two fighter jets collided in mid-air Sunday.
The crash happened about two miles from Mountain Home Air Force Base, roughly 50 miles southeast of Boise. Witnesses described seeing smoke rise into the air moments after the collision.
“We were actually watching two planes right in front of us doing the air show,” attendee Anna White said. “We didn’t actually see the collision happen, but we did see the aftermath.”
The incident occurred during the second day of the Gunfighters Skies Air Show.
“We of course started looking at the road and that’s when we saw that big black plume of smoke behind us,” White said.
Officials said all four crew members involved in the crash successfully ejected from the aircraft and parachuted safely to the ground. Emergency crews quickly responded to the crash site and the resulting fire. Following the incident, Mountain Home Air Force Base was placed on lockdown and the remainder of the air show was canceled, according to the Mountain Home Police Department.
The Mountain Home Air Force Base Gunfighters later released a statement confirming emergency responders remained on scene and an investigation into the crash is underway.
