Federal Reserve Weighs Interest Rate Hike As Inflation And Energy Costs Rise

(NBC)- The Federal Reserve is set to announce a closely watched interest rate decision Wednesday as policymakers confront rising inflation and higher energy costs.

The Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled to release its decision at 2 p.m., followed by a news conference with Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh at 2:30 p.m.

Financial markets have been anticipating an increase in rates after recent data showed consumer inflation accelerated in August. Consumer prices rose 0.4% from July and 3.4% from a year earlier, with higher gasoline and diesel prices contributing to the increase.

Warsh has emphasized the central bank’s focus on controlling prices. An increase would make borrowing more expensive for consumers and businesses, potentially affecting credit cards, auto loans and mortgages.

The housing market is already feeling pressure from elevated borrowing costs. Existing home sales fell 2% in August to their lowest level in 14 months, while mortgage rates have climbed to their highest levels in more than a year.

The Fed’s decision also comes as the war with Iran continues to affect energy markets. The Congressional Budget Office released a report Tuesday examining the military, economic and budgetary effects of U.S. combat operations against Iran.

Higher oil and fuel prices can contribute to inflation by increasing transportation and production costs that can ultimately be passed along to consumers.

The Fed’s decision comes amid public pressure from President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly called for lower interest rates. The central bank, however, sets monetary policy independently, with officials weighing inflation and employment conditions when making rate decisions.

The Federal Reserve’s current meeting began Tuesday and concludes Wednesday with the announcement of its latest policy decision.
