Federal aid available for Hurricane Helene victims in 30 additional Georgia counties

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has extended federal assistance to residents in 30 additional Georgia counties following the impact of Hurricane Helene.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has extended federal assistance to residents in 30 additional Georgia counties following the impact of Hurricane Helene.

This assistance is designed to help individuals and businesses recover from the storm’s damage.

The newly approved counties include Atkinson, Bacon, Ben Hill, Berrien, Bulloch, Burke, Candler, Chatham, Clinch, Colquitt, Cook, Echols, Emanuel, Evans, Glascock, Irwin, Jeff Davis, Jenkins, Johnson, Lanier, Laurens, Lincoln, McDuffie, Montgomery, Screven, Telfair, Treutlen, Ware, Washington, and Wheeler, according to FEMA.

Residents in these areas may now apply for grants covering temporary housing and home repairs, along with low-cost loans to address uninsured property losses. Additional programs are also available for other disaster-related needs, such as transportation, childcare and moving expenses.

“Individuals and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance by registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov,” FEMA announced in a news release. Those affected can also apply by calling 1-800-621-3362 or using the FEMA App. People using relay services, such as video relay or captioned telephone services, should provide FEMA with their specific service number.

In addition to the newly added counties, Appling, Brooks, Coffee, Columbia, Jefferson, Liberty, Lowndes, Pierce, Richmond, Tattnall, and Toombs counties had previously been approved for federal disaster assistance.

Federal funding is also available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work in Atkinson, Bacon, Ben Hill, Berrien, Bulloch, Burke, Candler, Chatham, Clinch, Colquitt, Cook, Echols, Emanuel, Evans, Glascock, Irwin, Jeff Davis, Jenkins, Johnson, Lanier, Laurens, Lincoln, McDuffie, Montgomery, Screven, Telfair, Treutlen, Ware, Washington and Wheeler counties.
