Execution scheduled for Georgia’s only female death row inmate
The Gwinnett County Superior Court ordered the execution of convicted murderer Kelly Gissendaner to be carried out on a date between September 29 – October 6, 2015, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. Commissioner Homer Bryson set the date for Tuesday, September 29, at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson at 7 p.m.
Georgia Department of Corrections Officials said Gissendaner was convicted in 1998 for the murder of her husband Doug Gissendaner.
Gissendaner’s execution has been postponed twice. Her first execution date, February 25, was rescheduled because of the weather. Officials postponed the execution again after the lethal injection drug appeared cloudy during a test. Gwendolyn Hogan from the Georgia Department of Corrections said officials called the pharmacist and decided to delay the execution out of caution.
The Georgia Department of Corrections said if executed, Gissendaner will be the 35th inmate put to death by lethal injection.
