EASTMAN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man who barricaded himself inside an Eastman home came outside unarmed Wednesday after officers spoke with him by phone, according to the Eastman Police Department.

Police say the incident ended peacefully, and the man was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

According to a Facebook post Thursday, officers responded to the area of Fourth Avenue near Rogers Street after receiving a report of a suicidal person.

Dispatchers told officers the man reportedly had a handgun and that a shot had been fired inside the home, police said.

Officers established a perimeter around the home. Air Evac was placed on standby, and EMS personnel waited nearby.

Police say officers contacted the man by telephone and asked him to leave the home unarmed. After about 20 to 30 minutes of communication, he agreed to come outside with his hands raised and without a weapon.

The department credited the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, Eastman Fire Department, Dodge County EMS and Dodge County 911 with helping resolve the incident safely.

The investigation remains active, according to police.
