Driver Pinned Under Overturned Dump Truck
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Traffic came to a halt for more than four hours on Riverside Drive, Friday.
The snarled traffic was due to an overturned dump truck, which trapped the driver. The collision brought traffic to a stand still, and most drivers were forced to wait it out.
The accident happened around 11 a.m., in the 5000 block of Riverside Drive near about 100 yards from the Monroe County line.
“It’s a miracle he made it out alive,” is what rescue workers are saying about Robert Fan Worthy Jr., who was penned between the overturned truck and the door.
“As we arrived on the scene we saw the stand-byers waving us in and when we got there we started investigating,” said Macon-Bibb County Lieutenant Shaun Hart. “We saw that we had a guy trapped under the dump truck, the door was actually resting on his head.”
Firefighters used air bags to free Fan Worthy, of Lizella.
He was driving behind a Chevy Impala, when the driver, William Rawlings Maige of Cairo, suddenly went in a different direction. The maneuver triggered the collision which had an impact of more than 158,000 pounds, because the dump truck was filled with red dirt when it rear ended the car, according to Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Clay Williams.
“It appears that the white impala attempted to make a u-turn and did not see the dump truck,” said Williams. “Then he commenced to do the u-turn in front of him. The dump truck lost control after striking the impala and landed on its side.”
Although Maige was not injured during the accident, he was ticketed for making an improper U-turn.
FanWorthy is in stable condition at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. The rescue workers say they were relieved, knowing FanWorthy survived the crash.
