MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mercer University head football coach Drew Cronic has resigned to join the Navy Midshipmen as an offensive coordinator, Mercer Athletics announced on Tuesday.

“Coach Cronic has made great contributions to the Mercer football program, as well as to Mercer University, over the last four seasons,” Mercer Athletics Director Jim Cole said.

Under Cronic’s leadership, the team went 28-17 over four seasons, including a 9-4 record in 2023. The 2023 season ended with Mercer University’s first berth in the FCS Playoffs. The Bears beat Gardner-Webb 17-7 in the opening round before falling in the 2nd round to eventual national champion South Dakota State. The Bears also set a record for wins against NCAA Division I opponents in consecutive seasons, including nine in 2023.

The team’s impressive 17-4 (.810) home record over the last four seasons included five wins in 2023, marking the program’s best performance since 2013.

The Bears also excelled individually under Cronic’s leadership, boasting more than 50 all-conference selections from Phil Steele since the end of the 2019 season, including 27 in the last two seasons. Additionally, Cronic mentored seven student-athletes to all-America honors.

At Navy, Cronic replaces Ashley Ingram, who left after 16 seasons as an assistant to take the head coaching position at Carson-Newman.
