Dooly County man dead, child hospitalized after crash in Monroe County

One person is dead and a child is hospitalized after a crash Sunday night in Monroe County.

MONROE COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – One person is dead and a child is hospitalized after a crash Sunday night in Monroe County.

It happened just before 7 p.m. near the intersection of Old Cabiness Road and Highway 83, according to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Anna Watkins.

Watkins says the crash involved a maroon Acura MDX and a tractor-trailer truck. The driver of the Acura, Jeffery Mathis of Dooly County, was pronounced dead on the scene.

A 9-year-old, who was also in the Acura, was transported by helicopter to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to a Macon hospital.

The crash is under investigation.
