Special election set for State Senate District 18 in January

The January 20 election covers six Middle Georgia counties, with a potential runoff on February 17.

ATLANTA (41NBC/WMGT) – A special election will be held January 20 to fill the State Senate District 18 seat vacated by Senator John Kennedy, according to a notice issued Wednesday by Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

The district includes Crawford, Monroe, Peach and Upson counties, along with portions of Bibb and Houston. A runoff, if required, will be held February 17.

Qualifying will take place at the Secretary of State’s Elections Division in Atlanta. Candidates can sign up December 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., December 16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and December 17 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The qualifying fee is $400.

December 22 is the voter registration deadline for anyone who wants to participate in the special election. Advance in-person voting begins December 29.

Kennedy submitted his resignation Tuesday while campaigning for lieutenant governor.
