Diplomatic push intensifies as Iran ceasefire deadline nears
The White House says JD Vance is expected to return to Pakistan to lead another round of negotiations aimed at securing a deal.

(NBC)- A last-minute diplomatic push is underway as the ceasefire between the United States and Iran approaches its expiration, raising fears of renewed conflict.
The White House says JD Vance is expected to return to Pakistan to lead another round of negotiations aimed at securing a deal.
But tensions remain high, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping disruptions and military activity have escalated.
Iranian officials say they will not negotiate under pressure, as Donald Trump continues to warn of severe consequences if talks fail.
“They’re going to negotiate, and if they don’t, they’re going to see problems like they’ve never seen before,” Trump said.
The president also signaled he is “highly unlikely” to extend the current two-week truce, while renewing threats to target Iranian infrastructure—including power plants and bridges—if a deal is not reached.
Meanwhile, the U.S. continues enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports, a move that recently led to a direct confrontation at sea.
Military officials say U.S. forces fired upon and seized an Iranian cargo ship that attempted to bypass sanctions, with U.S. Central Command releasing video of warnings issued before the vessel was stopped.
Policy experts estimate the blockade is costing Iran roughly $435 million per day, while also contributing to volatility in global oil markets and rising gas prices in the U.S.
Public opinion appears to be shifting as well. A new NBC News poll shows declining approval ratings for the president amid frustration over the ongoing conflict—particularly among younger voters.
“We are suffering here… and there is this great promise of long-term gain,” said one college student. “But that’s what’s been said to us for years.”
Despite the challenges, the White House says it remains focused on securing a deal.
Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign ministry is condemning the seizure of the cargo ship and demanding the immediate release of its crew. Officials there are also warning they have prepared “new cards on the battlefield” if fighting resumes.
