Deputies arrest 2 men in contraband drop attempt at Washington State Prison

DAVISBORO, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies intercepted an attempted contraband drop near Washington State Prison early Wednesday morning.

According to a Washington County Sheriff’s Office news release, a deputy patrolling near Davisboro spotted a suspicious vehicle stopped in the middle of a highway close to the prison. After observing the vehicle, the deputy reported seeing a passenger throw a large trash bag out of the window. The deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over. That led to a brief chase.

Deputies say they seized illegal drugs and other prohibited items after the vehicle came to a stop.

“Our team is committed to staying vigilant and proactive in our efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of our community, always ready to respond and protect,” Sheriff Joel Cochran said.

45-year-old Byron Gearing of Atlanta and 27-year-old Demarcus Morgan of Atlanta both face several felony charges.

Gearing is charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, trafficking methamphetamine, and trading with inmates without the consent of the warden.

Morgan is charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, trafficking methamphetamine, trading with inmates without the consent of the warden, fleeing or attempting to elude police, and multiple traffic violations, including reckless driving and failure to maintain lane.
