MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Dozens of Democrats gathered at Overtyme Bar and Grill in Macon Tuesday night to watch the first presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The watch party was hosted by the Democratic Party of Georgia.

Jaylan Scott, chairman of the Macon-Bibb Democratic Committee, spoke out during the event against divisive rhetoric in politics, specifically mentioning past comments from former President Donald Trump targeting Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and his wife.

“At a minimum, I want somebody that is not going to talk bad about my family, somebody that respects all American families, somebody that won’t talk about me for having a different opinion,” Scott said. “This is America. We were founded off the principle that we can work together if we have different values.”

Scott’s comments follow months of tension between Trump and Kemp. Their relationship has since been publicly repaired.

No public Republican watch parties were scheduled in the area. 41NBC will continue to monitor debate reactions from both parties in the coming days.
