MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Middle Georgia State University (MGA) has received a $3 million grant from The Delta Air Lines Foundation, marking the largest single donation in the institution’s history and a significant boost for the state’s burgeoning aviation industry.

A check was presented last week at the school’s Dinner in the Hanger event in Eastman.

“This grant opens doors to creating more opportunities for prospective students in our state to pursue rewarding careers in aviation,” MGA President Christopher Blake said. “We are deeply appreciative of The Delta Air Lines Foundation for recognizing the central role our School of Aviation plays in supporting Georgia’s aviation industry.”

The grant, awarded to the MGA Foundation, will be dispersed over three years, according to a MGA news release. $1.5 million will fund long-term educational initiatives, including the extension of K-12 partnerships across Georgia and the development of new flight-training sites in rural areas and around Atlanta.

The School of Aviation, headquartered in Eastman, already operates satellite locations in Macon and Griffin.

$500,000 will be allocated for cutting-edge equipment, while an additional $1 million will go towards faculty recruitment, including the creation of a new Delta Air Lines Endowed Professorship of Aviation.

More than 90% of MGA’s aviation students are from Georgia, 39% of the aviation student body are minorities and 18% are women.

The School of Aviation offers a wide range of academic options, including bachelor’s and associate’s degrees in various aviation disciplines, as well as several certificate programs.

Founded in 1995, the school has seen a nearly 200% increase in enrollment over the last five years and holds international accreditation for its bachelor’s flight program.
