MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Homeowners and renters in 63 Georgia counties affected by Tropical Storm Debby and Hurricane Helene now have more time to apply for federal assistance. FEMA has extended the application deadline to February 7, 2025, according to a news release from the agency.

The extension applies to those who suffered damage during Tropical Storm Debby in August and Hurricane Helene in late September and into October.

Residents can apply for assistance online at DisasterAssistance.gov, through the FEMA App, or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. If you use a relay service such as Video Relay Service, captioned telephone or other service, give FEMA your number for that service. You may also visit any Disaster Recovery Center. For locations and hours, go online to fema.gov/drc.

For needs not covered by insurance or other sources, FEMA may be able to provide Individual Assistance grant money that does not have to be repaid for:

  • Rental assistance for those displaced by storm damage
  • Reimbursement for lodging expenses due to temporary relocation
  • Basic home repairs for primary residences
  • Replacement of damaged or destroyed personal property
  • Other significant needs directly caused by the storms

The agency says survivors must file only one application per household and cannot receive payments for lost or spoiled food. Additionally, FEMA cannot duplicate benefits already covered by insurance or other sources.

Applicants should prepare the following information before applying:

  • Phone number where you can be contacted
  • Address at the time of the disaster
  • Address where you are staying now
  • Social Security Number of one member of the household
  • Basic list of damage and losses
  • Bank information if you choose direct deposit for FEMA money
  • Insurance Information: if you have insurance, including the policy number

For those with insurance, FEMA recommends filing claims immediately since the agency cannot duplicate benefits for insured losses. However, federal assistance may help cover costs beyond what insurance policies provide.

Applicants are encouraged to keep receipts for all cleanup and repair expenses related to storm recovery.
