Dashcam Video Shows United Plane Clipping Light Pole Near Newark Airport

(NBC)- Dramatic dashcam video is shedding new light on a frightening aviation incident involving a United Airlines flight attempting to land at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Authorities say United Flight 169, arriving from Venice on Sunday, came in too low during its final approach and clipped a light pole near the New Jersey Turnpike just seconds before landing.

The incident was captured by a bakery delivery driver traveling on the highway below.

In the video, the sound of the approaching aircraft is followed by crashing glass as the plane’s landing gear appears to strike the pole.

A freeze frame from the footage appears to show the aircraft’s wheels just outside the driver’s window.

According to the New Jersey State Police, “a landing tire and the underside of the plane collided” with the light pole, which then struck the delivery truck.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board are now working to determine whether the aircraft itself also made contact with the truck.

Witness Patrick Oyulu captured additional video moments after impact showing the aircraft continuing toward the runway.

Weather conditions at the time included wind gusts nearing 40 miles per hour.

NBC aviation analyst Captain John Cox said the pilots appeared to maintain control of the aircraft despite difficult conditions.

“With that gust, they let it get a little bit low,” Cox explained.

Remarkably, the truck driver survived with only minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment, according to police.

“Whoever I speak to, I just say I thank God that I’m alive today,” the driver said.

United Airlines confirmed the plane landed safely and said no passengers or crew members were injured.

The airline also announced the flight crew has been removed from service pending an internal investigation.

In a statement, United said it “will conduct a rigorous flight safety investigation into the incident.”

The driver’s employer later described the close call as “a miracle.”
