CRAWFORD COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A collision on Tuesday involving a bicyclist and a vehicle resulted in non-life-threatening injuries for the cyclist, according to a news release from Crawford County Sheriff Lewis S. Walker.

The collision, which happened just before 9 p.m. on Boy Scout Road near the Peach and Crawford County line, involved a 32-year-old woman driving a vehicle and a 29-year-old man riding a bicycle. Both were traveling northbound in the same lane.

The cyclist was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

According to the news release, the female driver was determined to be at fault and was issued a citation for not following procedure when passing a bicyclist.

Proper passing procedure

In Georgia, a law passed in 2021 requires drivers to maintain a minimum clearance of three feet when passing a bicyclist. Drivers should change lanes if possible to provide this space. If changing lanes is not possible, they must reduce their speed to at least ten miles per hour below the posted speed limit or to 25 miles per hour, whichever is more, before passing the bicyclist with the required three feet of clearance. (Georgia Code § 40-6-56)
