Body found in South Macon on Halloween declared 23rd homicide

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A homicide on Halloween, Bibb County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a body found in a South Macon neighborhood Tuesday evening.

Like something out of a scary movie, workers with the county found the body as they were driving down Rosecrest Avenue. Bibb County investigators and the coroner say they do suspect that it was foul play.

Horror on a hill is what Macon-Bibb Public Works employees stumbled into during the early evening hours of Halloween.

“Just after 4:00 PM this afternoon, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a deceased person found on Rosecrest Avenue,” said Lt. Randy Gonzalez.

Amidst overgrown bushes, the crew passing by stopped to check out what they thought may have been a person laying in the driveway of an abandoned home.

“A public works person said, ‘well it looks like a body’, they backed up and it was,” said Lonnie Miley with the Coroner’s Office.

The person they found–now identified as 30 year-old Jontavious Towns of Macon.

“It is being investigated as a homicide,” said Gonzalez.

Investigators say the gruesome discovery came just a day after they received a call about a missing person.

“A missing person report had been called in on Mr. Towns within the last 24 hours, and family and friends had been trying to contact him–unfortunately this is where he was found,” said Miley.

Lt. Gonzalez says investigators don’t have a cause of death yet but will know more about what happened as details continue to unfold.

Miley says Towns was known to roam the streets. What they aren’t sure about is whether he frequented the area he was found in or how his body ended up there.

This is now the 23rd homicide in Bibb County this year.
