Construction begins on Macon-Bibb Mid-City Square project

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – More construction is underway in downtown Macon.

Public works crews spent Tuesday morning tearing down old buildings on the corner of Pine and Second Streets to make way for what will be the “Mid-City Square.”

The government’s goal is to attract more development on the 2nd Street corridor. Officials say the completed product will be a big draw for residents.

“It’s going to be bike friendly, people friendly, and will open us up for more development as far as commercial. It will connect Mercer to the hotel across the interstate,” Steve Layson, the assistant manager for the county, said.

A community development block grant is being used to pay for initial construction costs. The goal for the “mid-city square” is to provide a live, work, and play environment for Macon residents.
