Community volunteers to clean up Ocmulgee River

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Saturday was the 13th annual Ocmulgee Alive!

Volunteers from Middle Georgia traveled to Amerson River Park to grab canoes and get in the water.

Mark Wyzalek, Director of Laboratory and Environmental Compliance at Macon Water Authority, said the water authority started this annual event 13 years ago to help keep the Ocumulgee River clean.

“If you go out and see the roads and highways nearby, you’ll notice a lot of litter. What happens is that it ends up washing into storm drains, into creeks, and out into the river,” he said.

Volunteers included Mount de Sales Academy, Macon-Bibb County 4-H, and many more.

Wyzalek said the water authority values the river because it’s an important part of the community.
