Community remembers fallen Monroe County deputy

FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A somber Forsyth community is picking up the pieces, trying to come to terms with the fact that one of their own is gone.

It’s a community that’s heartbroken.

From popular restaurants, to public training facilities, even schools in Forsyth are remembering Monroe deputy Michael Norris, who was shot after responding to a suicide attempt call on Saturday in Bolingbroke.

“It’s just upsetting you know that the world can be like this, and people are just sick in the head and could just take somebody’s life like that,” one resident said.

Several residents are putting up blue lights at their homes and turning them on throughout the night in honor of Norris.

“It shows that everybody’s a family in the world and everybody needs to stick together and be with the Lord. Pray for everybody to have peace,” Norris said.

At Katherine B. Sutton Elementary School it’s the same, banners and ribbons fill the school where Norris was a resource officer.

“There are a lot of relationships when you look at how he interacted with the people here at Katherine B. Sutton,” Superintendent Anthony Pack said.

He says Monday was difficult for everyone at the school because Norris meant so much.

“…to some degree sadness, hurt. The faculty and staff, to them they’ve lost a member of their family,” Pack said.

“The families got to know him as someone who was helpful and respectful and very well liked,” he said.

Pack says now the school is looking to move with community forward….together, as they honor one of their fallen heroes.

The blue lights will be on throughout the community during the evenings in Forsyth.

The funeral for Deputy Michael Norris is scheduled for Friday, September 19 at 2 p.m. at the Georgia Public Training Center in Forsyth.

Visitation is Thursday, September 18 from 5-8 p.m. also at the Georgia Public Training Center.
