Community members remember the life and accomplishments of Georgia H. W. Bush

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Flags across the nation flew at half staff on Wednesday as the entire nation said goodbye to former president George H. W. Bush including residents in Middle Georgia.

“I know during this time to lose a father is really a sad moment,” said resident Jeanette Clark Simmons.

Many said it was a somber day as they remembered the life of America’s 41st President but that his legacy was one the nation should be proud of.

“He was a true American and he was definitely an All-American war hero for us too,” said resident Melinda Doyle. “He stood for so much for our country, he gave us hope, wonderful family values,” she continued.

Thousands of Americans tuned in to Bush’s funeral to pay their last respects and remember his legacy as a public official.

“I think it was a really nice tribute to him. All the speakers had wonderful things to say and they brought in some of the humor which I think they said he had,” said Simmons.

She was one of those people who watched from Macon. She says she remembers him being well respected and likable.

“I know that he seemed to be a very personable president really keeping the country in mind and not a lot of self. We didn’t have a lot of controversy as we do now,” she told 41NBC.

Bush was a man known by the nation for his longstanding political history and good character. Local residents say he will be dearly missed.

Bush died at age 94 after battling Parkinson’s disease. More than 3,000 people attended his funeral service in Washington.

Several living presidents including Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and President Donald Trump were also present at the service.
