Community forum allows Bibb BOE candidates to voice opinions

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The upcoming Bibb County Board of Education election is fast approaching.

Friday afternoon, the Middle Georgia chapter of the National Action Now organization hosted a community forum to hear from the candidates.

Daryl Morton and Dr. James Bumpus are running for Post 7 on the board, and both feel they can bring qualified leadership abilities to the board.

“Macon’s my home I’ve practiced law here for 25 years,” said Morton. “I’ve got an education law background. I know what the rules are I know how to follow them, and I want to do is provide good leadership to our schools and our community at a time when we really need it.”

“What I bring as a candidate for school board is a mature leadership and a desire to move forward from our racism in our community, and a desire to see our children perform and do well,” said Bumpus.

The Post 8 race includes Dr. Wanda West, who currently sits on the board,
and businessman Darren Latch.

West’s message included highlighting her experience as an educator and board member.

Latch thinks a fresh face would do the board and the community some good.

“I’d like to see new leadership come into the Board of Education, it’s been a part of this for the last three or so years–there’s a lot of problems in there at the moment, and I’d like to be a part of the solution and getting them sorted out and actually bringing it back to the children,” said Latch.

“I’ve been in this business a long time and I’ve served from being a student in Bibb County to even having served as the chair of this Board. So I have served education from a child all the way up the line,” said West.

The election will be May 20th.
