Commissioners approve $1.8 million for South Bibb Recreation Center additions

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It’s been a long time coming, but the brand new South Bibb Recreation Center is on the road to completion.

“I think the most exciting part is just bringing it to South Bibb,” said president of Warren Associates Incorporated, Warren Selby. He has worked on this project for about four years.

Macon-Bibb Commissioners approved an additional $1.8 million to the already $7.64 million center. The additional money, that was voted on Tuesday, will help Selby and his contractors add more to the first phase of construction.

“The additional funding that was just approved is for two additional ball fields, it’ll have additional tennis courts,” said Selby. “We’re going to do more enhancements to the swimming pool.”

Those amenities are adding to the cooking and computer labs, basketball court, workout area and dance room. As well as locker rooms.

“This is a fairly large site,” said Selby. “There’s a master plan that shows walking trails, soccer fields and a lot of different amenities. That won’t be in this first phase but there is a phase two.”

The extra funding may delay construction a little longer.

“That’s just because we don’t want to open the rec center and still have concrete trucks and different workers crossing paths with our youth,” said Selby. “We want to make sure it’s safe and secure. That when we turn the facility over that it’s in the shape that it needs to be.”

Construction is expected to be finished by the end of the year. Selby says more phases of the project will follow.
