Coliseum Cardiac and Pulminary Center Cutting Edge in COPD Recovery
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Rosanna Hill was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in 1999. Hill’s health continued to decline and in 2012, her Atlanta doctor referred her to the Coliseum Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center.
Hill says that was a blessing.
“Now, all the things that I had to cease doing before, I can do them now,” says Hill. “I’m getting out, I’m shopping. I’m just doing all those kinds of things. I still have to use the oxygen, but all the things I had enjoyed doing in the past that I had to discontinue, I’m now able to do them.”
Hill was among the patients attending a lung disease workshop Wednesday, at the rehabilitation center. The workshop is designed to help patients by giving them updated information and suggestions on how to cope with day to day living.
Patients must be referred by a physician to the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation center for treatment.
The medical director of the facility says they have a proven track record for good results.
“Our success rate at the rehab unit has been amazing,” said Dr. Larry Grant. “We get people that come in who are oxygen dependent unable to leave the house and after twenty four sessions they are able to get up, they’re able to go it’s been amazing.”
The Coliseum Cancer Institute and the Coliseum Pulmonary Center are teaming up to spread awareness about lung health during November, which is National Lung Cancer Awareness and COPD Awareness month.
“We want to find a way to help them simplify their daily lives,” says Respiratory Program Coordinator, Amanda Spivey. “We know that this is something from the time they wake up in the morning this is something that they’re going to have problems with, the simplest task are going to be a chore for them to get through and we want to have them walk away today equipped to know what to do.”
