Cities of McRae and Helena to consolidate on New Year’s day

McRae-Helena, GEORGIA (41NBC/WMGT)- The cities of McRae and Helena in Telfair County will consolidate New Year’s Day at 12:01AM.

The newly elected mayor and six council members will be sworn in at the Helena Municipal building.

“We are excited about the consolidation of our two cities,” councilwoman Janeen Tokar says. “We are consolidating because of a waste sewer problem and McRae is saving Helena from the cost of repairing the problem.”

McRae’s current city hall will become the city hall for the newly formed city.

Residents will pay taxes at that location.

The consolidation will make the city account for 52% of Telfair County.
