Centerville church collects women’s purses for needy

CENTERVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A group of Houston County churches, including a Centerville church, want to give back to the community. They’re collecting purses filled with toiletry items for women who need them.

Centerville United Methodist Church member Carrie Dominy got the idea from a friend in Savannah.

She says she’s been surprised at the number of purses they’ve collected after just a few weeks.

“I knew I had to do something and I’ve always helped people one way or the others so that’s when the Mission Closet became a reality,” said Dominy. “I wanted to do something to give back to the community but also help the ones that really need things.”

If you want to help out, drop a purse off at Centerville United Methodist Church on North Houston Lake Boulevard.

The box is right inside the door.

Dominy also runs the Mission Closet, which is a store that gives away items for free.

The have tons of books, clothes and other items to make your life a little easier and little more fun.

“We don’t charge. We don’t go out and collect clothes they just bring them. People all over Warner Robins, teachers, people at the hospital, people at the church bring clothes, blankets, pillows all kind of things. And it’s donations only.”

The closet is also inside the church.

We do real good, you know with people that give donations. But see we have a food pantry here too. And on Tuesday we’re open from 9-1. The office gives them what we call a voucher and we give them a brown bag full of clothes.”

It’s something for the community that she loves.

“We don’t charge for it because we don’t pay for anything we get.”
