Carl Vinson VA Medical Center receives Moderna vaccine

DUBLIN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The Carl Vinson VA Medical center in Dublin, began COVID-19 vaccinations. The Medical Center received their first batch of vaccines on Tuesday.

They’re just one of 113 VA Medical Centers across the county to receive the limited supply.

Director of the Medical Center, David Whitmer, explains how the vaccine is distributed.

“First the veterans who are living in our term care facility, our community living centers and then to VA  health care personnel.”

Orania Tigaiero, Chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care, was the first person at the Medical Center to receive the vaccine.

Tigaiero says she feels proud and honored, but most importantly wants to help educate others who take the vaccine.

Once the first two groups have been vaccinated, Director Whitmer said they’ll begin offering vaccines to more veterans who are at high risk.

They expect additional shipments of the vaccine after the holidays.

In the meantime, veterans can speak with their primary care teams, or visit the VA web page at https://www.va.gov/health-care/covid-19-vaccine/ for more information.
