Business owners aiming to take advantage of Milledgeville Main Street success

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) -The city of Milledgeville has one of the best main streets in America, that’s according to a program part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Every day for the last seven months, Tommy Cook has seen customers come into his shop by the dozens.

He’s one of the co-owners of Need a Nerd.

Cook calls it a one-stop shop for all of Milledgeville’s tech needs.

He’s been in the city for ten years. He think the improvements in downtown are bringing more money to his store.

“Over the past 10 years I have seen this downtown do a complete and total 180,” Cook said.

Last month, Milledgeville was awarded for having one of the Great American Main Streets in the country, beating out 20 cities.

It’s an honor, Main Street director Carlee Schulte believes it will continue to impact the area.

“Obviously we always can grow more, but this is something that we can use for economic development and tourism that we’re really excited about,” Schulte said.

Award recipients win based off of how they manage to preserve and promote the use of historical structures, that includes restoring store fronts, and bringing business back to older buildings.

“You can feel it when you drive through or when you walk down the sidewalks. I think it keeps that charm. That southern charm, the small town feel, and it’s just very important,” Schulte said.

It’s a process both Schulte and Cook agree, adding the award will continue to boost the city’s economy.

Milledgeville is one of three cities to win the award.

Several events are in the works to celebrate the win later on this year.
