BS Report: The Auburn Autopsy
Well, there’s no doubt a lot of questions are being asked today by members of the Bulldog Nation. As we look back on what happened two days ago in Athens, as Auburn kicked the game winning field goal to win the game by three points in an unbelievable game. That’s what most Georgia Auburn games are like, not what we’ve seen in the last nine games.
When Georgia’s won easily in many occasions. Look, a lot of people are going to blame Gunner Stockton. And I understand there’s no question the young man had his worst game of the season and struggled. The fumble at the end was crucial. And there Georgia was driving to get into field goal territory to maybe win the game and escape a game with a win, even though they didn’t play particularly well.
But you can’t put it all on, Gunner, even after the fumble right then and there. Georgia’s defense could have stopped Auburn, and instead they had a stupid penalty that gave them a first down, and they allowed some yardage again from Byron Brown and put Auburn into field goal position to win the ball game. So again, it wasn’t Ole Gunner Stockton.
But the turnovers obviously were were very, very difficult to overcome. And look I kind of say the same thing. I said a week ago when I thought that Georgia won the game easily over Alabama in spite of it only being a three point win. I think you have to give the same kind of credit to Auburn for this game.
I’m not going to say they won it easily by any means. I mean, they struggled there then to hold on and had to kick the game winning field goal. But Auburn deserves a lot of credit. We can complain a lot about what Georgia did and what they did not do, the turnovers, etc. but Auburn deserves a lot of credit.
And you know, I ask for questions. On social media. Last week when a lot of Alabama fans were getting on me for the segment I did on here about Georgia’s win over the Crimson Tide. And I’ll ask the same questions now in pertaining to this game against Auburn. The first question is which quarterback played better, which a lot of times in football, high school or college or pro, you can look at which quarterback played better to get your answer for which team won.
Well that was Auburn and Byron Brown. There’s no question about that. I mean, again, Gunner had a rough day. Brown had a 150 passing yards one touchdown pass, no interceptions. He then ran for 115 yards with a touchdown in 26 attempts. So this kid had a really good day and Georgia could not stop him. He was slippery and they just could get their hands on him and containing very well.
And so the answer to that question is Byron Brown number two. Which rushing game had the best game between the two teams? It was Auburn again. They had 192 rushing yards, mainly due to Byron Brown. Georgia only won 13. Now Frazier played a little bit. Didn’t look right, didn’t look 100% healthy. I don’t know why he played. Phillips obviously was thrown out there to the Wolves, and he had a lot of, playing time, a lot of snaps, and he did the best he could.
But the offensive line, which is our third question, which offensive line played better? Well, you know, the holes that were there last week for the Alabama game, for Georgia’s running game with Phillips and Walker having great days, it really was not there against Auburn. The other day. I mean, they didn’t play awful by any means. But again, you’ve got to have the offensive line open to holes for you.
And that did not happen against Auburn like it did against Alabama. And then the fourth question is about the defense. Which defense played better. And you know, I’m going to give the edge to Auburn. I mean they were able to contain the running game for Georgia only allowing 113 yards. They helped cause the turnovers obviously with the two interceptions and poking the ball out at the end there with the fumble.
And Georgia you know they could not contain Brown. So you give those edges to Auburn and you give the credit to Auburn. Look this this college football season is not set up to be a perfect season for any great team. We saw that on Saturday night with five of the top seven teams, the Associated Press poll from last week losing.
They lost. And that shows you how hard it is to win each and every week. It’s hard to get your players up for each and every game. Georgia was obviously up for Alabama and Tuscaloosa a week ago, and it didn’t look like they were as much against Auburn. So you can’t expect perfection from a team. And you have to understand that, you know they’re going to have a bad game.
And that was Georgia’s bad game. Through the first seven weeks of the season, they now have a week off and they’ll prepare for next week’s game in Atlanta. To rebound against the Florida Gators.
