Body of Fort Benning soldier pulled from Chattahoochee River

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) – The body of a soldier who drowned while swimming in the Chattahoochee River has been recovered after a three-day search.

Rescuers pulled the victim, identified as 23-year-old Michael Ferreira Astiazu, from the waterway about 9 a.m. Wednesday. Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan says he was located about five miles from the 13th Street Bridge, where he had gone in Monday afternoon.

Bryan tells The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer Astiazu was not wearing a life jacket.

Bryan says officials will check with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to see if they believe an autopsy is necessary.

The incident comes after rescuers pulled three people from the river and another from the dam near Lake Oliver in June. Two of those incidents resulted in deaths. The survivors were cited for not wearing life vests.
