Bill Shanks is ready for football season to start in this week’s The B.S. Report
Thursday night we will see Georgia Tech start the season as Alcorn State hits Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets could be very good this year. They’ve got a tough road game in South Bend against Notre Dame, a tough road game at Clemson and a big home game against Florida State. The Yellow Jackets have a great quarterback in Justin Thomas. That’s what they need in Paul Johnson’s offense. But it’s their defense that could make the difference. Yes, Georgia Tech may have its deepest defense in years. That could make them very good.
As for Georgia, the Bulldogs start Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe in Athens. We finally know who will snap the ball first at quarterback. Greyson Lambert from Wayne County was named the starter Monday. Let’s just try not to worry about this situation and instead eagerly await the chance to see Nick Chubb run. He was tremendous last season as a freshman, and the Bulldogs need him to be just as special this season. Whether it’s Lambert of Brice Ramsey, the Bulldogs need to figure out the quarterback situation before September 19th. That’s when South Carolina comes to Athens. The Gamecocks have won four of the last five against Georgia, and we all know Steve Spurrier loves to beat Georgia. But if Lambert and Ramsey struggle the next two weeks against ULM and Vanderbilt, Georgia will be in trouble.
Both Georgia Tech and Georgia could win 9 or 10 games. They both should win their divisions. And the game in Atlanta in late November should be special. But if that quarterback situation for Georgia remains an issue, the Bulldogs are going to give me a lot to talk about this fall.
Let’s talk about the Falcons for a minute. They looked awful last Saturday against the Dolphins. The offensive line is still a problem. Matt Ryan better have good health insurance. He could have been hurt the other night. The Falcons have whiffed on several offensive linemen in the draft and then at times been too loyal to the ones they’ve drafted that just didn’t pan out. Now, with a new offensive line scheme in place, they’re in trouble. There is no running game right now. The three running backs are trying to get healthy from hamstring injuries. But they have got to fix the offensive line. The defense looks better, but they have GOT to fix the offensive line. I don’t know how, but they can’t risk Ryan’s life like that.
Finally, the Braves are horrible. Just root for the draft pick. And be glad it’s finally football season!
