Big Savings from Composting

Next time you think about throwing away uneaten food you should think again, because you can put those scraps to good use by composting.

There are several benefits to composting, such as reducing dependence on chemical fertilizer and reducing a household’s waste by close to 700 pounds each year.

According to Lowe’s Garden Associate, Michael Riley, 30 % of all waste that goes into landfills is from the kitchen and yard.

He’s says creating a compost is a great way to stretch your buck, because you already spend the money on groceries. “It’s  essentially free,” says Riley.

Plus, any good gardener knows soil matters when it comes to healthier plants.

When creating a compost these items can be used:
1.Leaves
2.Yard Clippings
3.Fruits
4.Vegetable

Make sure you avoid these items
1.Meat
2.Items that rot
3.Newspapers
4.Greasy Foods

A good “green” rule of thumb is to have a 3 to one ration of browns to greens in your compost, which  means more leaves than vegetables.

Riley says, “It keeps the texture of the compost, so it will actually produce the best results, and also it will keep the smell down.”
