Bibb Interim Superintendent Creating New Plan Based on Your Feedback
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County interim superintendent has a lot of work ahead of him. Dr. Steve Smith has been here less than a month, but he already has big plans for the school district.
Some people are calling Smith Macon’s miracle, but he humbly disagrees. He is here for only a year, but he plans to use that time wisely. And he’s starting off by listening to your thoughts on what the school system is doing well and what changes need to be made.
Whether you are a teacher, student, parent, or resident, the Bibb County school district wants to hear from you.
“If I didn’t listen to them, I wouldn’t know what their concerns were so I really wouldn’t have any idea about how to address the problems that exist,” Smith said.
Smith says he cannot put together a new strategic plan for the upcoming school year without your input. That is why he held two listening sessions this week to find out the pressing issues within the school district. One parent says it is the lack of discipline.
“If you have a great teacher but you have 6 or 7 discipline problems, that makes that teacher work twice as hard to get those non-discipline problem children an education,” Bibb parent Demetrice Blassingame said.
Blassingame has seven kids in Bibb schools. She is grateful for the opportunity to voice her thoughts on what needs to be done.
“You can go to a board meeting or you can meet with a teacher or principal but that doesn’t mean the head person is really going to get your thoughts or your concerns,” Blassingame said. “He’s [Smith] here, he’s in the meeting, he’s walking around, he’s talking to you, he’s actually listening to what you have to say.”
Smith is taking notes and he plans to use this feedback to make a better Bibb County.
“We’re going to prioritize the needs and start from the top and work down,” Smith said. “I want to plant the seed and hopefully my successor when he or she comes in here, they’ll be able to really continue to nurture and see it grow to fruition.”
Smith hopes to have the new plan ready to present to the board by mid July.
