MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office will resume enforcing school zone speeding citations starting Monday, May 5, at 6 a.m., according to a news release and accompanying video from Sheriff David Davis.

The citations will only be issued when the yellow warning lights in school zones are flashing in the morning and afternoon. No citations will be issued when the lights are not flashing.

Drivers must be traveling at least 11 miles per hour over the posted school zone speed limit to receive a citation, according to the release.

Davis said he hopes the changes will “give some clarity to the school zone camera enforcement program and we can move forward.”

The decision comes after Georgia lawmakers failed during the 2025 Legislative Session to pass two laws related to the speed cameras: one that would phase them out entirely in a few years and another that would rein in statewide enforcement techniques starting immediately. Sheriff Davis suspended enforcement of citations in March, citing ongoing debate and pending legislation.

Previously, school zone speed cameras in Bibb County operated under the framework allowed by state law, which permits enforcement within one hour before and one hour after the start and end of the school day, regardless of whether the yellow flashing lights were on. This approach led to confusion among drivers, especially since not all schools started or dismissed at the same time. While the county and media outlets, including 41NBC, posted enforcement schedules multiple times, many drivers assumed that citations were only issued when the lights were flashing.

Under the new policy announced on Tuesday, Bibb County will enforce school zone speed limits only when the yellow lights are flashing, a local decision aimed at reducing confusion.

The release says all schools in Macon-Bibb County have the option to decide if they want to participate in the school zone camera program. Stratford Academy and First Presbyterian Day School, which had previously received Department of Transportation permits to use automated school zone cameras, have chosen to opt out of the program and had their permits canceled. As a result, no speeding citations will be issued in those school zones.
