Bibb County School District thanks interim superintendent for service

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The Bibb County School District honored Interim Superintendent Dr. E. Steven Smith Sunday afternoon at Central High School.

Smith will officially retire December 31, 2014 and pass the reins of Interim Superintendent to Deputy Superintendent Dr. Kelley Castlin-Gacutan.

The program had special performances from violinist Pat McCall, and Vineville Academy students sang songs. Northeast High School senior Auriel Wright gave Smith a special send off, acknowledging his many efforts to make the district the best.

“I wanted him to know that he did an excellent job, “ Wright said. “I gave him a full assessment and he passed with flying colors.”

Different members of the community, including Judge William Adams, saluted Smith for his commitment to education and also told personal stories of friendship.

Smith addressed the crowd at the end of the program.

“I didn’t do any of this alone,” Smith said. “There is no I, there is an us. We have made many promising moves toward a better school district.”

After the reception, the district held a reception for Smith.

“He was an excellent leader and an even better friend,” Mark Stevens said.
