MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to avoid celebratory gunfire and stay safe with fireworks during Independence Day celebrations.

In a news release, the sheriff’s office said celebratory gunfire is illegal and dangerous. Firing a gun recklessly or within 50 yards of a public street or highway violates Georgia law.

“When you fire something up into the air, it must come down,” the release said. “Stray bullets can damage personal property, and it can cause personal injury or even death.”

The sheriff’s office reminded the public that bullets returning to the ground can do serious harm.

“Many people know that a bullet will travel high into the sky, but they don’t think about the fact that it comes back down at a high rate of speed,” the release said.

The sheriff’s office is also reminding residents of fireworks safety rules. On July 3 and July 4, fireworks can legally be used from 10 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. However, people under the age of 18 are not allowed to use fireworks, and an adult should always be present when fireworks are being discharged.

Bibb County patrol deputies will be on duty throughout the holiday weekend, keeping an eye out for anyone handling firearms or fireworks recklessly or driving under the influence.

“We want to do our part to ensure that everyone has a safe and Happy July 4th celebration,” the release said.
