Bernd Elementary celebrates Earth Day

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Children at Bernd Elementary School in Macon were all smiles today as they helped celebrate Earth Day.

There were activities, skits, and dance performances as the students learned the importance of being environmentally conscious.

“The younger kids have been planting seeds and doing various activities around Earth Day,” said fourth grade teacher Elizabeth Branan, who organized the event. “It’s going to be a good day to get the kids doing something for the environment, letting them know that they can help take care of the Earth.”

Branan went on to say that it’s key to teach children early the importance of keeping Earth protected from litter, pollution, and other harmful environmental effects, “If we can instill in them at a young age that they have a responsibility to take care of the Earth and respect it, then hopefully that will continue as they get older.”

While the students were learning about protecting the environment, the environment itself had other ideas as a planned tree planting ceremony had to be pushed back to a later time due to rain.
