Bearcat women’s hoops spoils Bobcats’ Senior Night, 70-65

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (GC ATHLETICS) – Senior night turned out to be a tough one for the Georgia College women’s basketball team (14-12, 10-9 PBC) as they fell to Lander University (23-5, 16-3 PBC) Wednesday in the Centennial Center, 70-65.

The Bobcats sent four seniors on the court for the contest. Leading the way for Georgia College was Shanteona Keys (Roswell), who finished the night with 17 points and five rebounds. The double-digit effort marks her 93rd of her career and 25th of the season. Keys finishes the regular season at No. 2 all-time for the Bobcats in points with 1,780.

Enisha Donley (Loganville) was the other senior in double-figures for the Bobcats. The forward ended the contest with 16 points and five rebounds, marking her 18th double-figure performance of the season and 68th of her career. Donley now sits at fifth all-time in points for Georgia College with 1,295, passing Dominique Huffman at 1,280.

The other two seniors for the Bobcats were Belinda Schaafsman (Momence, Illinois) and Kayla Upchurch (Alpharetta). Schaafsma led the way for the Bobcats with 11 rebounds, while finishing with four points. Upchurch finished the night with seven points, playing 18 minutes during her final night in the Centennial Center.

The Bobcats stole the lead late in the first half to go into the break with a 27-26 lead. Georgia College shot 33.3 percent (10-30) from the field in the first half and out-rebounded the Bearcats 22-19. The Bobcats caught on fire in the second half of the contest, shooting 53.6 percent (15-28) from the field, but were unable to overcome Lander’s bench productivity.

The Bearcats had three double-digit scorers come off the pine. Leading the way was Aarika Judge with 20 points, hitting 6-of-13 three-pointers. The other two were Breshay Johnson and Mylea McKenith, who ended the night with 17 and 14 points respectively. Lander managed to hit 43.3 percent of their field goals (26-60), edging the Bobcats 43.1 percent (25-58).

The Bobcats will look for redemption, as they are set for a rematch with the Bearcats Saturday Feb. 28, in Greenwood, S.C., the game set for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The contest will mark the first round of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament, which saw Georgia College take a No. 4 west seed all the way to the PBC Finals, just a year ago.
